Not all forests are the same – explore the differences between various nature reserves

In the northern part of Abborrtjärnberget lies a virtually untouched pine forest, with trees up to 400 years old.
In the rest of the area, traces of 20th-century logging can still be found. Unlike today's timber industry, only trees suitable for wood production were selected and transported; the rest were left standing or, if already felled, left to decompose naturally. This created ideal conditions for species that depend on dead pine wood, especially various fungi and lichens.
Charred tree stumps and fire-damaged trees bear witness to the fact that the pine forest on Abborrtjärnberget has been shaped by numerous fires. Many unique animals, plants, and fungi depend on burned forests. Therefore, controlled burns are occasionally carried out to preserve the area's biodiversity.
From the parking lot, follow the path across the dam and up the steps into the nature reserve. There is a marked hiking trail, but it is currently poorly signposted.
