Not all forests are the same – explore the differences between various nature reserves

On the northern side of Stor-Bjurselliden stretches a truly ancient spruce forest – many spruces have thrived here for over 200 years.
The old trees have been left standing. A few have been felled, but there has been no major logging. Many dead spruces lie on the ground, some decomposing under the influence of rare fungi. With a bit of luck, you might find the protected diamond willow fungus (Haploporus odorus); its strong, characteristic anise scent is noticeable from afar. Unlike the fragrant bracket fungus (Trametes suaveolens), which also occurs in more southerly latitudes, the diamond willow fungus retains its scent even when dried. Please note, however, that you are in a nature reserve; this habitat must not be disturbed, and the vegetation is protected. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times.
