An excursion for ornithology enthusiasts and bird lovers
Begin your tour with a first stop at the Stor-Frängsträsket birdwatching tower on the way to Norsjö. The wooden tower, just 10 meters from the road to Norsjö, offers fantastic views of the lake and its marshlands, as well as the opportunity to observe the local birds. A stop here is well worth it!
Next, continue to Lake Väjsjön with its unique birdlife – the only place of its kind in Västerbotten. In spring, many birds stop here on their migration to northeastern Sweden and Finland. At this time of year, the lake is still covered in ice, and the meltwater floods the grassy shores.
Lake Väjsjön was once part of Lake Norsjön. At the end of the 19th century, Norsjön was drained to increase hay production, creating Lake Väjsjön. According to old documents, the annual hay yield was around 400 tons. After mowing around the lake was discontinued in the 1940s, the wetland recovered, but the shallow lake is now significantly smaller.
A roughly 10 km long circular trail with a barbecue area and viewing platforms leads around Lake Vajsjön and offers glimpses into the diverse and beautiful birdlife. A great outing for the whole family.
Please note that this is a nature reserve. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times; picking flowers or breaking off branches is prohibited. Between April 15 and August 15, it is not permitted to leave the marked trails to protect resting and breeding birds.
