Experience the summit of Vithatten and learn about the legend of Spökhuset

Mount Vithatten (511 m a.s.l) lies directly on the border between Norrbotten and Västerbotten and offers in good weather panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. A roughly 1 km long hiking trail leads from the parking area to the summit. Marshy sections and a steep, rocky section in the final meters make the ascent a bit of an adventure.
A tourist center in the shape of a 45-meter-high wooden moose was once planned for the summit, featuring a restaurant inside, a viewing platform in the crown, and front legs in Norrbotten and hind legs in Västerbotten. The project was never realized – the reasons (and the potential investment) remain a matter of speculation.
At the foot of the mountain is the so-called "Spökhus" (haunted house). Legend has it that a settler woman died in this house giving birth to her third child, and her two older children died of cold and hunger in the following days. The father was busy working with wood for several days and only discovered the tragedy upon his return. Tourists who have stayed in the cabin since then report strange noises, doors suddenly jamming, and unusual lights. They swear that the woman's ghost still haunts the place and therefore advise visitors to greet the ladies politely upon entering the cabin, which supposedly alleviates the haunting somewhat.
