Underwater landscape – explore the sunken ghost forest
This excursion on the Skellefteälven River takes you into a surprising underwater landscape. Entry can be a little tricky depending on the water level due to the shallows, but it's doable. What awaits you afterward is unique: On windless days, the clear water allows you to see all the way to the bottom. Numerous tree trunks and stumps bear witness to a forest landscape from the time before the river was dammed – a landscape that is now completely submerged. The cool temperatures in the northern Swedish waters and the low oxygen levels preserve the wood – the decomposition process by fungi and bacteria is greatly slowed. This is how the so-called "ghost forests" of dead tree trunks, which still stand underwater today, were formed – impressive remnants of the landscape before the flooding.
The Abborrtjärnberget nature reserve, with its ancient trees, lies directly on the riverbank.
